Bayern tops Dortmund for ninth straight win

02/13/2010 - Munich, Germany (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Arjen Robben and Mario Gomez scored in the second half, and Bayern Munich won its ninth straight Bundesliga match, 3-1 on Saturday at the Allianz Arena over Borussia Dortmund.

Bayern has not lost in the Bundesliga since September, and has scored 29 goals during its current winning streak. Bayern, which is undefeated in 15 straight, stayed level on points with first-place Bayer Leverkusen, and picked up ground in goal differential.

Leverkusen extended its season-long unbeaten streak to 22 games with a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg on Saturday. Leverkusen holds a one-goal edge in differential.

Mark van Bommel also scored for Bayern, which scored at least three goals for the seventh time during its winning streak. Hans-Jorg Butt made six saves in a great performance overshadowed by the scoreline.

Dortmund dropped its third straight and slipped 12 points out of the top spot.

Borussia Dortmund dropped a 5-1 decision to Bayern earlier this season at home but Mohamed Zidan put the visitors in position to erase that setback with the opening goal in the fifth minute. Zidan fought off Bayern center back Daniel van Buyten and fired to the bottom-right corner past Butt.

Bayern weathered more chances from Dortmund before Bastian Schweinsteiger had one of its first real chances with a header wide left in the 18th.

Kevin Grosskreutz nearly handed Dortmund a two-goal lead seconds later, but he was denied by a diving Butt at the right post. Bayern then settled in, and the home side was level by the 21st.

Gomez and Thomas Muller had chances before captain Mark van Bommel leveled the match with his first of the season. Van Bommel accepted a short corner from Robben and fired a long blast that deflected off Dortmund's Lucas Barrios and sneaked inside the post.

Gomez missed high in the 37th as Bayern nearly grabbed the lead, and Dortmund nearly added its second before halftime but Barrios wasted a chance from close range.

Bayern was in front just five minutes into the second half, with Franck Ribery and Robben combining on the second goal. Muller sprung Ribery on the left side of the area, and his pass through Dortmund defender Mats Hummels legs set up Robben for a tap in from just a few yards out. Robben scored in his fourth straight match.

Dortmund still continued to pressure Bayern, but Barrios was denied by Butt in the 64th, and Gomez put the hosts in control one minute later.

Ribery played Gomez down the left and the German striker did well to stay just onside. He ran around Neven Subotic to latch onto the pass, then drove to the area and fired past a sprawling Dortmund goalie Marc Ziegler from the top of the six-yard box to the bottom-right corner for his team-high 10th goal.

Grosskreutz was frustrated by Butt again in the 77th, again denied by the ex- German goalie, who is allowing less than a goal a game during Bayern's winning streak.

Ivica Olic and Schweinsteiger, who hit the crossbar, both added chances in the closing stages for Bayern, which hosts Fiorentina in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Leverkusen's Stefan Reinartz followed a scoreless first half with the opening goal in the 48th, and Wolfsburg goalie Andre Lenz tacked on an own goal in the 68th. Edin Dzeko got one goal back for Wolfsburg in the 79th but the defending champions slumped to their ninth loss and sit just eight out of the drop zone.

Ruud van Nistelrooy opened his Bundesliga account, scoring twice as Hamburg beat Stuttgart 3-1 to solidify fourth. Van Nistelrooy joined Hamburg from Real Madrid in January.

Also Saturday, Werder Bremen rolled to a 5-1 win over Hannover, Bochum moved eight clear of the drop zone with a 2-1 win over Hoffenheim, and Hertha Berlin tied Mainz 1-1.

On Sunday, Schalke hosts Koln and Eintracht hosts Freiburg.

Academy Award Betting Odds for Best Picture Offer Great Value

If there is any category that is not an obvious win for any one nominee in this year's Academy Awards, it would be for Best Picture.  Sure the Departed is a 5/7 favorite, but that's hardly anything when we look at Helen Mirren and her "out-of-reach" 1 to 40 odds (which means you would win a whopping $1 for every $40 bet).

For value, take a look at MySportsbook.com Oscars betting odds on my personal favorite, The Queen - a remarkable 12 to 1 long shot.  The film hasn't won any pre-awards for Best Picture (compared to The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine), but there is a tremendous following and it is a strong enough film to warrant a surprise win.

TV Guide advises Oscar watchers should be cautioned not to discount the  drama "Babel" with its strong social themes about overcoming communication gaps among people of different cultures.

"While 'Babel' lost several guild awards to 'Sunshine' and 'Departed,'  it still enjoys loyal support, and historically Oscar voters favor dramas with social messages over comedies like 'Sunshine' and violent crime movies like 'Departed'."

"It hasn't done well in the guilds, which means there isn't much industry support," said Tom O'Neil of awards site TheEnvelope.com, "But several critics are expecting it to win, and that gets my attention." Babel had 7 to 2 odds at press time.

Who is to say independently produced Little Miss Sunshine won't be this year's Crash.  Last year, Crash won for Best Motion Picture, shocking those who bet on gay cowboy flick, Brokeback Mountain, as the favorite to win.
