Correia hopes to duplicate Latos' gem in third game with Astros

07/03/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Kevin Correia tries for his first win in six starts this evening when the San Diego Padres continue their four-game set with the Houston Astros at Petco Park.

Correia was charged with the loss on Monday against Ubaldo Jimenez and Colorado, as the Rockies hit him for six runs and seven hits in five innings, dropping him to 5-6, while raising his earned run average to 5.49. He also walked six batters in the loss and has issued 11 free passes in his last two starts.

"Walks just frustrate the heck out of me, more than anything," said Correia, who is 1-2 with an 8.07 ERA and a .311 opponents batting average over his past six outings. "I just don't feel wild right now. I need to stop walking guys, period. There's no shoulda', coulda', woulda' anymore. It's got to happen now."

He started off the year with a 4-1 record in April, but has sputtered to a 1-5 mark since, as his ERA has risen from 3.86 on April 28 to where it is now.

Correia has faced the Astros seven times (three starts) and is 0-1 against them with a 4.76 ERA.

San Diego can only hope that Correia gives it a performance like Mat Latos did on Friday. Latos and Heath Bell combined on a four-hit shutout, and David Eckstein's run-scoring double with two outs in the eighth broke up a scoreless game in San Diego's 3-0 victory.

Latos (9-4) threw eight scoreless innings to grab the win, giving up four hits while striking out seven and not walking a batter for the Padres, who have won two of their last three. Bell retired all three batters he faced in the ninth to preserve the Padres league-leading 11th shutout and earn his 22nd save.

Scott Hairston finished the winning rally with a two-run single.

Brandon Lyon (5-2) suffered the loss after yielding three runs on two hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning for the Astros, who had won three of their last four. Roy Oswalt dealt seven shutout frames, yielding only three hits while walking a pair and striking out seven.

Heading to the hill for the Astros tonight will be righty Bud Norris, who is 2-5 with a 6.84 ERA. In his first start back from the disabled list, Norris was hit hard by the Milwaukee Brewers, allowing five runs (four earned) and nine hits in five innings, but was bailed out by his offense in the 9-5 win.

Norris lost his only other start to the Padres back on May 7, yielding five runs in four innings of a 7-0 setback.

The Padres took two of three from the Astros earlier in the year, but Houston has won 10 of the last 14 in the matchup, including four of the last six in San Diego.
