02/17/2010 - Hallandale Beach, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Buddy's Saint, winner of the 2009 Remsen, makes his three-year-old debut Saturday in the $250,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park. The 1 1/8-mile race is historically a major stepping stone on the road to the Kentucky Derby.
A total of 10 three-year-olds have been entered in the Fountain of Youth. The supporting $150,000 Hutcheson Stakes, also for three-year-olds, has a field of eight. Both stakes lead to the Florida Derby on March 20.
Owned by Kingfield Stables, Buddy's Saint has drawn post two with regular rider Jose Lezcano in the saddle. Officially the colt, trained by Bruce Levine, has won two of three career starts for $218,600. Along with the Remsen victory he won the Nashua at Aqueduct, but was disqualified from first to second in his career debut.
Starting from the inside post will be Aikenite and jockey Alan Garcia. The colt is trained by Todd Pletcher for owner Dogwood Stable.
Aikenite, who finished a close fifth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, will make his second start of 2010 in the Fountain of Youth. Last month at 7-2 he was sixth in the Holy Bull Stakes behind Winslow Homer.
"The colt has been given the benefit of the doubt concerning his sixth-place finish in the Holy Bull Stakes," said Pletcher, "and we feel that the extra eighth of a mile that the Fountain of Youth offers will be most beneficial."
Since winning in his first lifetime start, Aikenite was third in Saratoga's Hopeful Stakes and second in the Breeders Futurity at Keeneland. He has earned $226,000 in his five starts.
Holy Bull runner-up Jackson Bend will break from post five with Jeremy Rose in the saddle. Trained by Nick Zito, the chestnut colt is owned by Robert LaPenta and Jacks or Better Farm.
Jackson Bend is the winner of five of seven starts for $507,820. Racing primarily at Calder, he won five in a row including three straight Florida Stallion Stakes.
Here is the complete field in post position order for the Fountain of Youth: Aikenite, Alan Garcia; Buddy's Saint, Jose Lezcano; Pulsion, Mike Smith; Pleasant Prince, Julien Leparoux; Jackson Bend, Jeremy Rose; Prince Will I Am, Paco Lopez; Positive Split, Edgar Prado; Eskendereya, John Velazquez; Lost Aptitude, Rajiv Maragh and Ice Box, Joe Bravo.
In 2009 Quality Road won both the Fountain of Youth and Florida Derby.
Spectacular Bid Stakes champ A Little Warm will go after his second stakes victory in the Hutcheson at seven-furlongs. The race has a post-time of 4:37 p.m. (et), a little more than hour before the Fountain of Youth.
Here is the field for the Hutcheson in post position order: Radiohead, Julien Leparoux; City Trooper, Garrett Gomez; Ibboyee, John Velazquez; Sum Champ, Cornelio Velasquez; Wildcat Frankie, Paco Lopez; Hear Ye Hear Ye, Jeffrey Sanchez; D' Funnybone, Edgar Prado and A Little Warm, Jeremy Rose.

Work left to do: Villanova, Syracuse, DePaul, West Virginia, Providence
Notre Dame and Louisville appear to have done enough to make the move, so we'll make them locks. The Cardinals, despite a modest RPI, are trending way up and have clinched at least a tie for third in the Big East, which should be more than enough with their pair of big road wins. Villanova got back to .500 and gets back to more solid footing. Syracuse got a very important road win and crippled a fellow contender in the process. West Virginia's fate could be in its hands Tuesday at Pitt.
Work left to do:
Villanova [18-9 (7-7), RPI: 21, SOS: 5] Pounded Rutgers to get back to .500. If Cats can get their last two (at UConn, vs. Syracuse), that should be enough with strong computer numbers and a host of wins away from The Pavilion. The Cats have beaten Texas and swept the Big 5 (never easy in Philly), but have a couple of losses to bubble teams (Xavier, Drexel), too. I still think they'll be OK, possibly even at 8-8.
Syracuse [20-8 (9-5), RPI: 53, SOS: 62] History says 10 wins will be plenty, but it might be hard for the Orange to get that last one with a final two vs. G'town, which is trying to win the league title, and at Villanova, which will be desperate for a W. The relative lack of nonconference heft and the weak computer numbers are still concerns, but the Orange have won four in a row and got a very, very big win at Providence on Saturday.
DePaul [16-12 (8-7), RPI: 54, SOS: 18] Beat Cincy and should get past South Florida to get to 9-7, but then what? They have beaten Kansas and Cal (right after the DeVon Hardin injury) earlier this season, but also have lost to Bradley and Purdue, among others. They'll likely need a couple of BE tourney wins, too, but we'll see ...
West Virginia [19-7 (8-6), RPI: 58, SOS: 125] The game at Pitt on Tuesday night could decide the Mountaineers' fate (barring a deep tournament run). They can still get to 9-7 in the Big East without it by beating Cincinnati, but the nine wins would be against UConn, Villanova, St. John's, South Florida, DePaul, Rutgers, Seton Hall twice and the Bearcats. Beating bubble foes is fine, but where's the beef? Outside of beating PG-less UCLA in nonconference play (still a top quality win), there's not a lot to fall back on (besides maybe NC State). WVU vs. Syracuse would be an interesting debate, as the teams don't play in the Big East regular season. WVU has the best win, but Cuse has played the much better schedule.
Providence [17-10 (7-7), RPI: 70, SOS: 33] The Friars likely saw their at-large hopes die at home in the four-point loss to Syracuse, barring an unexpected run to the Big East semis or more. The RPI, bad already, won't be helped by playing St. John's and South Florida in the final two league games.
