Huskies come calling on Wildcats in Big East showdown

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

02/15/2010 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Villanova Wildcats square off against the Connecticut Huskies tonight in a Big East showdown at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia.

The Wildcats entertained Providence at the Wachovia Center on Saturday and tallied a 92-81 victory. It marked the fifth straight win at the Wachovia Center for Villanova, which is now a healthy 22-2 overall. Winners of two straight, the Wildcats are also 11-1 in conference play, as they remain in the Big East title race along with Syracuse.

The Huskies meanwhile, came up short on Saturday despite the return of Jim Calhoun, falling 60-48 to Cincinnati. The Hall of Fame head coach missed seven games with a medical leave of absence before returning to the bench over the weekend. UConn has dropped two straight and five of its last six outings and this once highly ranked squad is now just 4-8 in conference play.

As for the all-time series, Villanova holds a 32-27 edge over UConn and the Wildcats have won three of the last four meetings at the Wachovia Center.

The Huskies shot a lackluster 34.6 percent from the floor, including a dismal 30.0 percent over the final 20 minutes, as they were defeated by Cincinnati over the weekend. UConn also struggled from long range (3-of-15) and at the foul line (9-of-18) in being held to a season-low 48 points. Kemba Walker paced the team in defeat with 14 points and three assists, while Jerome Dyson had 13 points and six boards. Dyson leads UConn in scoring this season at 18.8 ppg and he is also grabbing 4.8 rpg and dishing off 4.5 apg. Stanley Robinson, the squad's top rebounder at 7.6 rpg, follows with 16.0 ppg, while Walker turns in 13.4 pg and a team-best 5.8 apg. Gavin Edwards adds 10.8 ppg and 6.3 rpg off the bench to complete the list of double-digit scorers for UConn.

The Wildcats had their way down low, holding a 47-36 advantage on the boards and outscoring Providence in the paint, 44-26, in a victory this past weekend. Villanova also connected on 47.1 percent of its attempts from the field and 21-of-28 at the foul line. Scottie Reynolds and Corey Fisher each tallied 22 points in the triumph, while Antonio Pena registered a double-double with 15 points and 12 boards. One of the top players around, Reynolds averages 19.0 ppg to pace Villanova and he also distributes 3.5 apg and shoots 40.8 percent from three-point range. Fisher has provided a nice complement to him with 14.2 ppg and a team-best 4.1 apg to this credit, while Pena contributes 11.1 ppg and a team-high 7.7 rpg.

Michael Vick is back, Brett Favre isn't and the NFC East remains the best division in the NFC, maybe in all of football.

As players start to gather for the start of another season, some things change and some stay the same in the world of the NFL.

Bet 2010 Super Bowl Odds

The NFC East has been the dominant division in the National Conference for a while, despite limited playoff success, save for the New York Giants surprise Super Bowl win two seasons ago.

Hell, there's a generation of kids in Texas who have never seen the Cowboys win a playoff game (last win was in 1996).

But collectively, the Giants, Eagles, Cowboys and Redskins (well, maybe not so much the Redskins) are as good as a division gets in an NFC conference that has struggled to stay competitive with the AFC side.

Sports bettors have both acknowledged the NFC East's dominance, as one glance at the NFL future odds menu will show.

Looking over the NFL betting odds at online sports book MySportsbook.com we see the top three teams listed to win the NFC Championship are all from the NFC East:

Dallas Cowboys - 7 - 1

Philadelphia Eagles - 13 - 2

New York Giants - 9 - 2

Slotting in behind these three are two teams from the NFC North: the Minnesota Vikings (15-2) and the Chicago Bears (10-1).

Again, despite the lack of recent playoff success, the Dallas Cowboys are popular with the sports betting community, as they hold 14% of all the money wagered on who will win the NFC Championship.

So far, the New York Giants are the bettors' favorite to represent their conference in the Super Bowl, as they have 24% of the overall NFC Championship betting volume.

And what about the Philadelphia Eagles? For the most part, the Eagles had a very productive offseason, the kind that could bring them back to the top.

They had a good draft adding the likes of WR Jeremy Maclin and RB LeSean McCoy.

Unfortunately, the team received a blow when long-time defensive coordinator Jim Johnson passed away on Tuesday.

But this team will make a real run at the division title this year. Going into the regular season, Philly is listed at +240 to win the division.

Last season the Eagles were 9-6-1 SU and 10-6 ATS.

Teams from the NFC East will play teams from the AFC West in the regular season and the Eagles haven't really been a good bet in the last 20 games against the likes of San Diego, Oakland, K.C. and Denver, only going 8-12 ATS.

Two seasons removed from that Super Bowl title, the New York Giants see themselves listed as the odds-on favorite in NFC East championship futures at +162.

Plaxico Burress is gone and with him all the bad publicity surrounding the gun in the sweatpants incident, but can they replace him in the offense?

Last season the Giants were a very reliable bet going 12-4 ATS.

In the Giants' last 20 games against fellow teams from the NFC East; they are 13-7 ATS.

Dallas is listed at +240 to win the division.

Dallas went 9-7 SU and 7-9 ATS last season and with the amount of talent the Cowboys have, a similar performance won't do.

The Cowboys have been atrocious against divisional rivals, going 6-14 ATS in their last 20.

The Washington Redskins are longshots to win the division at +550.

Mayweather picked to beat De La Hoya
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -- Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya and his rival Floyd Mayweather Jr. arrived at the MGM Grand here Wednesday amid the pomp and pandemonium befitting two of the biggest stars in the sport who are about to duke it out for the WBC super welterweight crown this Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

As of Wednesday, MySportsbook.com closed its book with Mayweather a favorite to defeat De La Hoya at -170 (a $100 bet wins $70), while De La Hoya is a +140 underdog (a $100 bet wins $140).

Mayweather arrived at about 11:30 a.m. on a big truck with his face and a big "World's Best Pound-for-Pound" sign scribbled across the vehicle. He was accompanied by his entourage made up of rappers and his training team.

A crowd of close to 3,000 eager fans packed the MGM Grand lobby, with their cameras in tow, all trying to vie for position to get a good angle at Mayweather, who is acknowledged as the world's best fighter pound-for-pound.

Eric Gomez, Golden Boy Promotions vice-president, described the fan turnout as "amazing" and swore he had never seen anything quite like this event.

"The crowd was fantastic. Everybody was just too eager to see the two fighters," said ALA manager Michael Aldeguer, who was among those who waited at the lobby together with his ward Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista and AJ Banal.

De La Hoya made his own grand entrance at the hotel lobby at around 12:30 p.m. accompanied by GBP chief executive officer Richard Schaefer and trainer Freddie Roach.

The same group of fans who trooped to see Mayweather also lingered around to get a close look at De La Hoya, who has been secretly working out at a Las Vegas gym for days after arriving from his main training camp in Puerto Rico.

The golden boy then took part in a closed-door afternoon workout with Bautista and Banal. The two, along with Aldeguer and wife Christine, as well as an HBO crew were the only ones allowed inside the gym.

De La Hoya and Mayweather take part in today's final press conference before the official weigh-in this Friday.

Ring Magazine, the acknowledged bible of boxing, reported in its June 2007 issue that 12 out of 20 boxing experts it interviewed have favored Mayweather to defeat De la Hoya, with only 8 favoring the latter.

But Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao said in a recent interview with The Freeman's Emmanuel Villaruel that De La Hoya will win by unanimous decision over Mayweather.
