Another upset came when 92nd-ranked German Mischa Zverev took out fourth- seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, while eighth-seeded Julien Benneteau avoided an upset by handling fellow Frenchman Florent Serra 6-4, 6-4.
In opening-round action here on Wednesday, Belgian qualifier Yannick Mertens beat Czech Jan Hajek 7-6 (10-8), 6-1 and French wild card Guillaume Rufin edged out French lucky-loser Laurent Recouderc 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2). Recouderc joined the draw when sixth-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny pulled out, citing a right hip injury.
The top seed here is Swede Robin Soderling, who titled in Rotterdam this past weekend and was last year's French Open runner-up to the great Roger Federer. Soderling will open his stay here on Thursday against Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky.
The 2010 Marseille winner will claim $125,000.
