03/12/2010 - Kansas City, MO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks and the 23rd-ranked Texas A&M Aggies are slated to do battle in the semifinal round of the 2010 Big 12 Conference Tournament.
The winner of this contest will advance to Saturday's title game to challenge either Baylor or Kansas State.
Fourth-seeded Texas A&M disposed of 12th-seeded Nebraska by a score of 70-64 on Thursday. Still, the team has only won four of the 17 Big 12 Conference Tournament games it has played and is still in search of its first league crown. The Aggies are certainly playing with a great deal of confidence right now, as they closed out the regular season with three consecutive wins and currently own a 23-8 overall record.
Kansas, the top seed in this tournament, knocked off Texas Tech in yesterday's quarterfinal round by an 80-68 final, the 2,000th win in the history of the program. The Jayhawks have captured six Big 12 Tournament titles, at least twice as many as any other active member of the league. They captured three consecutive crowns from 2006-08, and they are 26-7 all-time in this event. At 30-2 overall, Bill Self's squad was highly impressive during the regular season and a favorite to claim the national title for the second time in three years.
The Jayhawks recorded a 59-54 road win over the Aggies in the only regular- season meeting between these two teams, and Kansas owns a 15-1 series advantage over Texas A&M.
Taking a look at yesterday's win over Nebraska, Texas A&M led by nine points at intermission but allowed the Cornhuskers to hang around in the second half. The Aggies were outrebounded by a 29-25 margin and permitted the Cornhuskers to shoot 50 percent from the floor. Fortunately for A&M, it was able to knock down nine three-pointers while committing a mere seven turnovers. Donald Sloan came through with 23 points, while Khris Middleton pitched in 17 points. B.J. Holmes added 11 points for the Aggies, who earned a 19-11 edge in points from the foul line. Sloan doesn't possess impressive numbers in assists, rebounds or steals, but his scoring output of 18.0 ppg has been a major key to the success of the Aggies this season. There is not another double-digit scorer on the roster for A&M, but the team is still averaging a respectable 71.9 ppg while limiting foes to 64.4 ppg.
Five players, including four starters, reached double figures in scoring for Kansas in the 12-point victory over Texas Tech yesterday. Sherron Collins, the team's gritty point guard, finished with 19 points and six assists. Xavier Henry added 13 points, while Marcus Morris and Cole Aldrich posted 12 points apiece. Aldrich, the club's center, ripped down 18 rebounds and blocked three shots as well. Markieff Morris came off the bench to register 11 points for the Jayhawks, who earned a 45-34 rebounding advantage and a 24-11 edge in points from the foul line. Overall this season, Kansas is registering 82.2 ppg while holding opponents 63.7 ppg on 37.7 percent shooting. The club is outrebounding foes by nearly seven boards per contest while shooting a stellar 40.7 percent from three-point range. Collins is averaging 15.4 ppg and 4.3 rpg, while Henry provides 13.9 ppg. Marcus Morris brings 12.4 ppg to the floor, and Aldrich checks in with 11.3 ppg, 10.0 rpg and 113 blocks.
