Culver, 17, is a Rochester, New York native who batted .561 with nine home runs and 38 RBI in 22 games as a high school senior.

The switch-hitting Culver joins C.J. Henry (2005) as the second high school shortstop selected in the first round by New York since Derek Jeter was taken with the sixth overall choice in 1992.
