06/29/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - New York Yankees young star Phil Hughes has been a pleasant surprise this season and will shoot for his sixth straight winning start when he takes the mound Tuesday versus the Seattle Mariners in the opener of a three-game series from the Bronx.
Hughes has won five straight outings and pushed his 2010 mark to 10-1 in 13 starts the last time out on June 19 versus the New York Mets. Hughes hurled seven innings of three-run ball, allowed five hits and struck out four in the 5-3 victory at Yankee Stadium, where he is 6-0 in seven starts this season.
The right-hander will try to keep the Yankees rolling when he faces the Mariners for the fifth time in his career. Hughes is 1-0 with a 2.00 earned run average in four career games (1 start) in this series.
New York squeezed past the Los Angeles Dodgers in Sunday night's 8-6 victory in 10 innings, as slugging second baseman Robinson Cano belted a two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning to put the Yankees ahead for good.
"I was looking for a pitch I could drive," Cano said. "It was middle-away. I thought that it was in the gap, I didn't think it was going out. I came through at the right time."
Alex Rodriguez also homered and scored three runs, while Chad Huffman finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI for the AL East-leading Yankees, who have won six of eight games and sit two games ahead of Boston in the division standings. Andy Pettitte lucked out in the no-decision after he was reached for five runs -- two earned -- and six hits in five innings. Closer Mariano Rivera pitched the last two innings for the win.
The Yankees will also host Toronto and are 25-10 in the Bronx this season.
Seattle will resume its nine-game road trip Tuesday and has lost three of four games since a six-game winning streak. It dropped two of three matchups with the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend and sustained a 3-0 loss in Sunday's series finale from Miller Park.
Jason Vargas had a rough outing and suffered the loss for giving up three runs and seven hits in five innings of work. It was the first loss for Vargas since May 4 against Tampa Bay.
"There were only two pitches that really hurt Vargas, but they both came in the fifth inning," Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said. "Narveson did a nice job of getting ahead of our hitters and then after that we helped him out by swinging at some pitches out of the zone."
Jose Lopez had a team-high two hits for the Mariners, who are last in the AL West standings and 11-26 away from the Emerald City this season. The M's will also visit Detroit on the current road swing.
Left-hander Cliff Lee is scheduled to make his 12th start of the season for Seattle tonight and he's 6-3 with a 2.39 ERA. He has won back-to-back starts and is 5-1 in his previous six decisions, including a second straight complete game performance last Wednesday in an 8-1 win over the Cubs. Lee allowed one run on nine hits with nine strikeouts, just one start after shutting out Cincinnati on June 18.
The left-hander, who has four complete games in 2010, will try to push his career record against the Yankees over the .500 mark. Lee is 4-4 with a 5.02 ERA in nine career starts against the Yankees in the regular season. He beat them twice as a member of the Phillies in last year's World Series.
Seattle and New York are meeting for the first time since the Yankees won six of 10 matchups a year ago.

The most popular sports to bet on are NFL and college football along with NBA and NCAA basketball. There are multiple betting opportunities within those sports, beginning with the basic wager on a game’s outcome (also called betting the side). College Football Point spreads are used in both football and basketball in an attempt to even the attractiveness of each team in a match-up. ( See our article detailing how and why point spreads are made)
But you could also simply bet on the money line, or straight-up winner of the game. Oddsmakers use the money line so that more money must be risked on the favorite or expected winner and less money on the underdog to balance the action on both sides. While money line gambling is an attractive option for football and basketball bettors who only care about picking a winner, it is the primary option for those bettors who enjoy wagering on MLB baseball and individual sports like boxing, tennis, golf and racing events such as NASCAR. ( More details on playing the Money Line)
Another bet across all major team sports including football, basketball, baseball, and hockey involves wagering on the amount of scoring in a game, called an Over/Under total. For example, the Over/Under total on Super Bowl XXXIX was 48, which means a bettor could wager whether there would be more or less than 48 points scored by both teams combined in the game.
The final score of Super Bowl XXXIX was 24-21; the scoring of both teams added up to 45, which means the game went Under . So Under bettors won, and Over bettors lost.
Sports gambling doesn’t end there. Betting sides and totals are the most common wagers available everywhere, but many sportsbooks also offer future bets on big upcoming events like who will win next year’s Super Bowl and what movie will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
The main advantage of futures is that you can get appealing odds by betting far in advance. For example, with NFL futures you often can get much higher odds on a team by betting before the season even starts. A NFL future bet on a team to win the Super Bowl odds might be 20/1 in the preseason; but by midseason, their odds might decrease to 10/1 if they turn out to be legitimate championship contenders.
Involves one individual wager, whether it be on your team to cover the point spread, to win the game straight-up on the money line, or to go over/under the total.

MySportsbook.com favors Bears, Bengals, Chargers and Colts to remain perfect
LAS VEGAS , Sept. 28 - Two big match-ups of undefeated teams have fans salivating at the Week Four schedule in the NFL. The Chicago Bears stifling defense looks to provide a less than hospitable welcome to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night in a battle of two 3-0 teams in the NFC conference. In the AFC, the San Diego Chargers (2-0) head to Maryland to face the surprising Baltimore Ravens (3-0) as both try to keep pace atop the conference standings. Betting Lines makers at MySportsbook.com, online sportsbook and casino, have set the Bears as 3.5 point favorites while the Chargers are a 2.5 point bet.
Of the three remaining undefeated teams, only one, New Orleans, enters this week's game as an underdog. Despite an emotional and resounding win over Atlanta on Monday night, the Saints are a 7.5 point underdog against the struggling Carolina Panthers. Indianapolis looks to stay perfect when they face the New York Jets as a 9 point road favorite while the Cincinnati Bengals are a 6 point favorite at home to the New England Patriots.
Six teams enter the week still looking for their first win, with a seventh, Tampa Bay, on a bye week. The prospect of dropping another game would not bode well for a potential playoff run. Since 1990, just three teams -- the 1992 Chargers, 1995 Detroit Lions and 1998 Buffalo Bills -- have overcome losing their first three games of the season to earn a postseason berth. And only the Chargers managed to accomplish the feat after starting 0-4.
